Temperature control

The condo is less than 1,000 square feet and easy to keep cool or warm.

Summer: keeping the condo cool

The condo isn’t air conditioned, but stays cool throughout the summer with the right heat management. On weeks with sustained 90+ degree temperatures, the condo will stay in the low 70s. Here’s what we recommend:

The sun rises out front, so the bedroom with the king bed requires the earliest attention. Sleep with a fan in the window blowing cool air in during the night. Close the window and blinds by 8am.

From 6am – 8am, open the window by the table and the back slider. Put a fan in front of each.

After 8am (or whenever the temperature starts to rise), close the doors and windows. The curtains in the main room can stay open until the sun moves to the back patio, around 2-3pm.

Leave the slider closed when you’re out back.

Winter: warming up the condo

The condo has in-wall heaters and a natural gas fireplace. You’re welcome to use either one or both.

The fireplace with the blower turned on will heat the main room and hallway within 20 minutes. (and is wonderful to stand in front of when it’s cold!)

The fireplace is left off. To turn it on:

Open the gas line by turning the handle on the gas line 90 degrees (line it up with the hose).

Ignite the pilot light:

  1. Open the panel below the fire box.
  2. Push in and turn the knob on the left to “pilot.”
  3. Hold down this knob with your right hand and push the “ignitor” button a few times.
  4. The pilot light is small and a little difficult to see. When it comes on, it’ll be on the left side of the fire box mixed in with the logs.
  5. Turn the knob on the left to “on.” Control the height of the flames with the knob on the right.

The fireplace will emit very low heat unless the blower is turned on. To turn the blower on:

  1. Locate the knob labeled “fan” on the upper back right corner of the fireplace.
  2. Turn the knob clockwise.

The blower will not turn on immediately – the fire has to heat up a little first. (takes about 10 minutes)
